Does Shopify Compress Images? (2026 Guide)
Does Shopify compress images? Yes. Shopify stores your upload and serves optimized variants through its CDN. That is not the same as a quality slider in admin you can turn off.
This is a short guide on platform behavior. Full workflow: how to stop Shopify from compressing images.
Short answer
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Does Shopify compress on upload? | Shopify processes and stores your file; CDN serves resized/compressed variants |
| Can you disable it completely? | No store-wide off switch |
| Can you control quality? | Yes, by uploading right-sized WebP/JPEG masters |
What merchants actually notice
Soft images usually come from low pixel count or over-compressed sources, not CDN alone. A 800 px photo looks blurry when the theme displays a 400 px tile on a 2x retina screen.
What to do instead
- Upload 2000 × 2000 px square masters when possible
- Pre-export WebP at quality 80–85
- Replace heavy JPEGs catalog-wide after review
Pixly converts to WebP before sync so Shopify starts from an optimized master. See convert all images to WebP.
