Shopify Product Description Images (2026 Guide)

Shopify product description images are inline photos in the product Description field, separate from the main Media gallery above the fold.

This guide covers upload steps, sizing, SEO, and how description images differ from catalog media Pixly optimizes.

Add images to product description

  1. Products → open product.
  2. In Description, click Insert image (or image icon in rich text editor).
  3. Upload or select from Files.
  4. Optionally set alt text in the image dialog (theme-dependent display).
  5. Save.

Sizing and performance

  • Width 1200–1600 px is enough for most detail shots
  • Compress before upload (WebP or JPEG 80–85%)
  • Avoid huge PNG infographics that slow mobile product pages
  • Do not duplicate every gallery image in the description (redundant weight)

Primary gallery SEO: alt text hub. Gallery specs: size guidelines.

Best practices

  1. Use description images for information (size chart, fabric close-up) gallery does not show
  2. Keep gallery as canonical product angles for Google Image Search
  3. Add alt text when the editor allows
  4. Host repeated brand assets in Files (upload to assets)
